Some uncommonly common terms in shares investing simply explained

 

The Long & Short

  • Long: Buying an investment with expectation it will increase in value
  • Short: Selling an investment with expectation it will decrease in value

 

Shares Order Types

  • Market: To trade at whatever is the current market price
  • Limit: To trade at the limit price or better
  • Stop: To trade when price passes a certain point
  • Stop Limit: Combines both Stop & Limit. Once a Stop price is reached, trading to stop at the Limit price
  • Day: Order terminates at the end of the business day
  • Good Til Date (GTD): Order is good to be fulfilled until at latest the specified date
  • Fill or Kill: An order which must be filled immediately or else is cancelled
  • All or None: Like a Fill or Kill but does not need to be filled immediately

 

Shares Charting Terms

  • White Candlestick (aka “green” or “open”)
    Closing price higher than the day’s opening price
  • Black Candlestick (aka “red” or “closed”)
    Closing price lower than the day’s opening price

  • Uptrend
    Higher high points & higher low points (HHHL)

  • Sidetrend
    Moving sideways between an upper & lower range limit

  • Resistance
    Pricing range where further upward movement it is more difficult to breakthrough higher above the level

    Pricing range where further downward movement it is more difficult to drop below the level

  • Gap: Pricing moving up or down significantly with no trades (a break or gap) in between
